KP Training Associates (KPTA)
Susan Kennedy & Dave Potts formed KPTA in 1998 due to a shared desire to utilise their separate and combined extensive experience of working with domestic abuse, particularly with male perpetrators, in order to provide co-gendered training and consultancy. While we have since broadened our areas of training, our main focus and area of expertise remains domestic abuse work.
KPTA's domestic abuse work
In our domestic violence work, KPTA's aim is to protect women and children by focusing on men through:
Providing a co-gendered and women-centred approach
Promoting evidence based and effective practice
Keeping up to date with research and practice developments
Enhancing relationships with womens' support services
Creating a safe environment in which workers can explore complex and sensitive issues
Recognising the impact of interventions on staff
Identifying masculinity as a criminogenic factor
SINCE 1998, KPTA has provided consultancy to several probation boards, independent sector agencies, domestic violence fora and community safety teams on their domestic violence service provision. We have also developed and delivered a range of training events, including training trainers, for practitioners and managers on areas such as risk assessment, skills development and effective interventions in domestic violence work.
We have provided a 'critical friend' review of community safety strategy documents, drafted implementation plans and evaluated several domestic abuse interventions. We have also consulted on the general development of domestic abuse protection work and the specific establishment of perpetrator programmes.
KPTA has also conducted a number of specialist assessments and individual programmes of work for CAFCASS and Social Services in cases where domestic violence is a feature in child protection or child access cases.
KPTA's other training includes:
- Pro-social modelling in prisons, both directly training senior and middle managers and also training trainers to deliver a manualised training package to other prison staff
- Motivational interviewing for psychologists, probation personnel and other community or prison based staff
- Co-worker training for teams delivering interventions to offenders and/or developing interagency links
- We have also piloted a manual for the delivery of Pro-social Modelling training for prisoners and trained prison staff in its delivery
- Effective personal office training for prison staff
